Eight members of staff in the Agency Department at NFU Mutual’s Head Office have set themselves the challenge to cycle 85 miles on 12 September 2013 – and as if that wasn’t enough, they’re aiming to complete it within a working day!
Split into two teams, Team North and Team South, they’ll start at our Worcester Branch at 7:30am before heading off in opposite directions, visiting five Branches each en route to our Head Office in Tiddington, with the aim of arriving by 6pm. All the riders are novices: some have bought replacement bikes, one member has borrowed one, and one has even had to learn how to change gear by watching Youtube clips!
The North Team route takes them to Kidderminster, on to Bromsgrove and Henley-in-Arden, then Coventry through to Stoneleigh and eventually back to HO. The South Team sees its first leg travel to Pershore, and then on to Evesham. Next it’s Moreton-in-Marsh, continuing to Deddington and the Stratford Agency, before completing the final downhill stretch back to HO. Both teams will be followed by support vehicles carrying all the essentials a professional cycling team will need - cakes, sweets, chocolate, drinks and at least a few bike spares!
While for some this challenge might sound like a walk in the park or a stroll along a sunny country lane, rest assured it isn’t for those taking part. For the most part they’ve not ridden a bike since childhood, and fitness levels are lacking to say the least. So far the first few weeks of training have been pretty eventful: there’ve been punctures, split inner tubes, falls, trials of multiple saddles, sore muscles, more sore muscles, pains in places hitherto unknown, getting lost and accidentally ending up on dual carriageways… but on a positive note there’s been much more enjoyment of the local countryside and happiness at the sheer amount of cakes that can be eaten to fuel up!
Our teams hope that their efforts and the brilliant work that Macmillan Cancer Support does will inspire people. Macmillan do an excellent job, at a time that can be very difficult for all involved and we’d like to be able to help them to do just a little bit more.
