Finding the right people to grow the business

Following its best ever year for new business growth, Corporate Insurance is developing a huge business proposition to ensure NFU Mutual is at the forefront of the market. Head of Corporate Insurance, Jason Raven, reveals more.

Jason Raven has been at NFU Mutual for the past 25 years, working his way up from underwriter to Head of Corporate Insurance. The reason he’s stayed? He’s passionate about what we do. Jason explains: “NFU Mutual does business in the right way. We place value on customers with the same values and that results in long-term relationships. We’ve a fantastic reputation in the market and 95 percent of our customers stay with us year-on-year.”

Over the past 18 months the face of Corporate Insurance has changed dramatically. And Jason’s vision for the next five years means it will continue to evolve as the business grows significantly towards 2020. To achieve this ambitious target it’s key that we develop and strengthen our overall proposition. “From the outside looking in, perhaps it doesn’t look very exciting here, says Jason, “But from the inside it’s clear to see there’s huge people and structural change happening.”

Jason explains the four key areas of focus: “In our Claims Department we are creating a claims relationship team to provide more focus and attention here. We’re also looking to improve client MI – we want to provide our customers with more detailed ways to manage risk, as well as to develop a claims extranet so our clients can log in and see that information.”

“Thirdly, our commercial team is developing a prospecting function that’ll be unique to the industry. And, finally, within claims and underwriting, we’re looking more closely at the development of non-conventional policies, which will have a huge impact on the cover we’re able to offer.”

Jason says that central to the change is the having right people in place. He explains that while certain processes and structures will change resulting in transformation across the business unit, the biggest risk to his vision is employing the right people to make it a reality. “We want people with a positive, can-do attitude, people excited by the opportunity to work closely with our biggest customers and grow our business. We are renowned for our technical ability and this remains important, however, it’s also personality that we’re looking for – these are the people that will see us achieve our ambitions.”

Jason is looking to grow his team substantially over the next few years and has a wide range of positions from underwriters and claims team leaders, to commercial development positions.
