A potted company history
The Stratford and District Farmer’s Union started offering cost-price insurance to attract more members into their Union. The Midland Farmers Mutual Insurance Society was formed.
Initially, the company operated solely around the Stratford-upon-Avon area. But, in time, farmers from other areas expressed interest in what they were doing.
The Mutual won a bid to insure the National Farmers Union of England and Wales. And so the National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society was formed.
Insurance was offered to non-farming customers through Avon Insurance.
The Society more than tripled in size, going from employing 40 staff in 1923 to 150 staff by 1933.
Almost 100,000 farming customers insured through NFU Mutual, but the growth did not stop there.
The NFU Mutual income was almost £4 million with assets totalling £9 million.
Continued our support of the farming community when victims of the Foot and Mouth outbreak received a share of over £1.5 million in indemnities.
Launched our Risk Management Service.
Started insuring individuals and businesses outside the farming industry.
Set up the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust to promote and support charities in the United Kingdom working in agriculture, rural development and insurance.
With over 900,000 customers and 300 local branches nationwide, we're big on local presence and personal service.
