First thing’s first: what is the Professional Trainee Scheme?

In short, it’s an investment in you and your career. Joining one of our business areas, you’ll gain a rewarding balance of on-the-job learning, hands-on experience and professional qualifications through a structured and insightful training programme. Over the length of your scheme, you’ll take on a number of different placements and activities in your chosen business area. Whichever scheme you choose, we’ll get you involved in high profile, live business projects with lots of opportunities to work with senior leaders. The programmes are designed to actively help you develop, and give you everything you need to shape a rewarding career. You’ll be supported at every step of your journey, with a dedicated buddy and mentor on hand to guide you, as well as a great network of current and previous trainees. We’ll sponsor you to complete a number of professional qualifications too, helping you sharpen up the skills you need to progress in your chosen career path.

What do I need to apply for the Professional Trainee Scheme?

Alongside a good degree, you’ll have an enthusiastic, positive nature and a proactive attitude – that’s really important. We’ll invest a lot into your development on the scheme, so we’ll need you to be ready to learn, get stuck in and grab hold of the challenges and opportunities that come your way. You pair ambition with a hard-working, driven approach and determination with excellent team working skills. Great with people, you’ll collaborate brilliantly with your teams and build strong working relationships at every level.

Customer Service Scheme (Closed)

What is the Customer Service scheme all about?

Great customer service underpins everything we do. It’s the heart and soul of our business. We’ve won numerous awards for our personal, trusted, reliable approach – and it’s something we’re constantly looking to enhance even further. Your role on our Customer Service scheme will be instrumental. You’ll experience what it takes to run a highly successful customer service operation, and provide the financial products that millions of people rely on. You’ll take on a number of placements in different areas, both at Head Office and in our regions. You’ll get hands-on insight into how our regions deliver to our customers and how Head Office functions support the regions in setting policies and delivering on strategy. Each placement will enable you to build valuable relationships and help you decide which exciting career path to take.

What kind of work will I get involved in and what opportunities will I have?

You’ll build up a strong knowledge of how our successful Claims and Underwriting functions operate across Head Office and our regions. With real responsibility and lots of exposure, you’ll get involved in and lead projects that add value to the business. We value your perspective and give you the opportunity to design and implement changes to our processes. You’ll have a buddy and mentor to support you and plentiful opportunities to build relationships with senior managers.

What training and qualifications will I have open to me?

We’re committed to your continuous development so throughout your placements, you will undertake training courses and have the opportunity to study towards qualifications such as the Advanced Diploma in Insurance (CII) and PRINCE2 (for project management).

Corporate Scheme (Closed)

What is the Corporate scheme all about?

Our Corporate scheme covers a diverse range of important business areas. Over three years, you’ll take on four nine month placements in different departments. These include Corporate Communications, HR, Learning & Organisational Development, Marketing, Strategy and Group Programme Management – each with its own challenges and a wealth of opportunities. You’ll gain fantastic insight into how we look after employees, our company strategy and how departments contribute to our long-term objectives. It’s an ideal chance to experience the operations of a leading UK insurance company, build valuable networks and learn all you need to shape a career you can be proud of.

What kind of work will I get involved in and what opportunities will I have?

In every placement you work in, you can look forward to on-the-job learning, interesting work, and great exposure to senior managers and key stakeholders. This could include leading projects, working in different regional offices or looking after a piece of work that is high on senior management’s agenda. Strategy will show you how we create and promote our award-winning products – and in Group Programme Management, you’ll experience how we turn these into reality. In HR and Learning & Organisational Development, your placement will help you understand how we look after our people and what makes us such a special place to work.

What training and qualifications will I have open to me?

We’re committed to your continuous development and throughout your placements we’ll offer professional training courses and support you to study towards qualifications, such as the CIPD Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management, the Certificate in Insurance (CII) and PRINCE2 (for project management).

Group Finance Scheme (Closed)

What does the Group Finance scheme entail?

What better way to gain a broad and deep understanding of how a large Finance department operates than with our hands-on Group Finance scheme? Over three years, you’ll rotate across three diverse placements in areas such as Financial Reporting, Planning and Analysis. It’s a hugely valuable opportunity to build up a wealth of skills across integral areas of the organisation, and see how the department supports the business in achieving long term strategic objectives and investing for the future. We’ll also get you joining us when we visit industry conferences and events. By the end of the scheme, you’ll have a career in Finance built on the best foundations.

What kind of work will I get involved in and what opportunities will I have?

Each placement will be full of hands on experience, where you’ll gain a strong understanding of our Finance department and how we operate. We won’t hold you back from getting involved from the very start. You’ll take responsibility for some high profile work, with exposure to every level of the business. So there will be plenty of chances to work with our senior management.

What training and qualifications will I have open to me?

We invest in our people. We’ll support you with a structured programme so that you can gain even more professional training and qualifications too, such as Chartered Institute of Management Accounts (CIMA) qualifications and PRINCE2 (for project management).

IT & Business Management Scheme (Closed)

What does the IT & Business Management scheme entail?

The role of IT is fundamental to the achievement of our strategic goals. And over the past few years, we’ve been through a major programme of change around our systems and we continue to ensure that we have the tools and technology in place to drive the business forward. Our IT & Business Management scheme is special, as it gives you the opportunity to gain a holistic view of the entire IT operation – from development and architecture to business analysis and project management. We’ve structured the three year scheme so that in the first seven months, you’ll complete short term placements to give you a broad understanding of different IT departments and how they work together. With this, you can then decide how you want to structure the rest of the time on your scheme, and gain deeper insight with longer term placements in areas you’re interested in.

What kind of work will I get involved in and what opportunities will I have?

Innovation is crucial to us and our IT business area is constantly evolving. Over your first seven months, you’ll gain a broad, fast-paced experience of our IT departments. This will put you in great steed to make informed decisions about where you spend your next placements. However it’s not all about your technical know-how and expertise, you will also build and manage meaningful supplier relationships and partner with different areas of the business. Naturally, throughout your time, you’ll build a strong support network and have the chance to work closely with senior managers. With over 17 placements options available, you’ll take on exciting, interesting projects and help to shape the future of our IT infrastructure.

What training and qualifications will be available to me?

We’re committed to your continuous development so throughout your placements we’ll offer professional training courses and support you to study towards qualifications. These include ITIL (for service management, business change, transformation and growth), the Certificate in Insurance (CII), and also PRINCE2 (for project management).

Marketing Scheme (Closed)

What is the Marketing scheme all about?

How do we brand ourselves effectively to understand and reach out to customers? Joining our three year Marketing scheme, you’ll experience every aspect of a successful marketing operation. Your placements will cover working on proposition, development, branding, customer insight, marketing communications, digital marketing and events. Varied? Absolutely. Exciting? Incredibly.

What kind of work will I get involved in and what opportunities will I have?

We’re continuously improving the ways that we reach out and communicate with our customers, so you can look forward to invaluable responsibility in each of your placements and having the chance bring your ideas to the table. From working on the end-to-end delivery of interesting projects to taking ownership of key communication channels and designing strategies for their use, we’ll get you involved in every area of our marketing work. There may also be opportunities to attend industry events, meet customers first hand and collaborate with leading brand, marketing and research agencies.

What training and qualifications will I have open to me?

We’re committed to your continuous development so throughout your placements we’ll offer professional training courses and support you to study towards qualifications. These include the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) qualification, the Certificate in Insurance (CII) and also PRINCE2 (for project management).

Regional Sales & Agency Scheme (Closed)

What does the Sales and Agency scheme entail?

We’re proud of our personal local service, and our agency network plays a key role in delivering this and driving the business forward to meet strategic goals. Getting stuck into the Regional Sales & Agency scheme, you’ll spend two years gaining experience that will be invaluable to the growth of your future career. You’ll be based in one of our regional sales teams, where you’ll become licensed to sell our products as you enjoy a structured development programme. Variety? There’ll be lots of that, you’ll enjoy different placements throughout your journey and have the opportunity to develop relationships with Head Office. And, of course, you will have our full support to help you shape a great career.

What can I expect to get involved with on the scheme?

Regardless of where you start, you’ll get involved from day one on real work with real impact. We’ll get you licensed to sell all of NFU Mutual’s products as soon as possible, so that you can jump straight into learning on the job. There’s a lot of exposure to senior management with us, and you’ll be given responsibility and accountability from the get go. You’ll gain a wealth of hands on experience, backed up with solid technical knowledge to make you an astounding part of our business.

What training and qualifications will I have open to me?

With NFU Mutual, we want you to truly develop and go further. That’s why you’ll be supported to gain industry recognised professional qualifications. With us, you can work towards your Certificate in Insurance (CII), gaining the Advanced Diploma in Insurance by the end of your placement.

Sales Development Scheme (Closed)

What is the Sales Development scheme all about?

It’s a really exciting time for NFU Mutual as we continue to grow and strengthen our position in the market. On the Sales Development scheme, you’ll be at the heart of our success as you join an area of the business that is crucial to shaping our growth in target sectors. Over three years, you’ll rotate through placements in various General Insurance Sales teams. Your experience will see you develop a valuable understanding of target sectors such as Retail & Wholesale, Food & Drink and Property. You’ll work closely with different departments and learn all about sector trends and everything that goes in to delivering effective sales campaigns. In your final year, you can choose the sector you want to specialise in and spend time building up your knowledge ready to influence sales strategies and coach General Insurance teams.

What kind of work will I get involved in and what opportunities will I have? 

One thing’s for sure, you’ll get lots of rewarding exposure on this scheme – to senior managers, interesting projects and influential external stakeholders. Your diverse placements will include Sector Development Strategy, General Insurance Sales Development and National Sales Campaigns so you can look forward to getting stuck in to a real variety of work. Externally, we’ll look to you to liaise with relevant professionals and organisations, and share key learnings with teams here. Through networking, shadowing and structured training courses, you’ll gain a specialist knowledge of commercial development and be well-placed to progress in your career.

What training and qualifications will I have open to me?

With NFU Mutual, we want you to truly develop and go further. That’s why, as well as a wide range of training courses, you’ll be supported to gain industry recognised professional qualifications. You can work towards your Certificate in Insurance (CII) and gain the Advanced Diploma in Insurance by the end of your placement.
