NFU Mutual began in 1910 as the National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society Limited. Back then, it was a union of seven farmers who saw the need for specialist insurance aimed at rural communities. A lot has happened since then and you can find out about our history and how we have grown to be an organisation with over 300 Agents nationwide below.

Who we are
Although we now welcome customers from all backgrounds, we will always focus on farmers and the rural community. They created our founding philosophy of providing members with the cover they need, at a fair price, and with a first class service.
And it’s this ethos that’s still very much at the core of our organisation.

A potted company history
In 1910, the Stratford and District Farmer’s Union were discussing ways to attract more members into their Union. They hit upon the idea of offering cost-price insurance, and so the Midland Farmers Mutual Insurance Society was formed.
Initially, the company operated solely around the Stratford-upon-Avon area. But, in time, farmers from other areas expressed interest in what they were doing.
In 1919, the Mutual won a bid to insure the National Farmers Union of England and Wales. And so, on 30th September 1919, the National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society was formed.
Over the following years the National Farmers Union Mutual Society went through some significant growth and development. In 1925 insurance was offered to non-farming customers through Avon Insurance and the Society more than tripled in size, going from employing 40 staff in 1923 to 150 staff by 1933.
By 1935 almost 100,000 farming customers insured through NFU Mutual, but the growth did not stop there. By 1952 the NFU Mutual income was almost £4M with assets totalling £9M. But, even through our sustained growth, our support of farming community continued and in 1967 victims of the Foot and Mouth outbreak received a share of over £1.5M in indemnities.
We've always been adaptable, in 1997 we launched our Risk Management Service. Then, at the turn of the Millennium we made NFU Mutual products available to all.
We are proud to say that over our history we have been recognised for the quality of the policies we offer and we have won a few awards for them as well. As well as our high policy-renewal rate and positive customer feedback, we've beaten some of Britain's biggest insurance names to win the prestigious Which? Award for Best Insurance Services Provider 2015 – and for the second year running. We've also recently won the Most Trusted Insurer and Most Trusted Home Insurance Provider awards at the 2015 Moneywise Customer Service Awards.
In 2016, we were also very proud to see NFU Mutual awarded a Gallup Great Workplace Award for our ability to create an engaged workplace culture.
Along with NFU Mutual, we have four subsidiary companies: NFU Mutual Direct, Risk Management Services, Avon Insurance and Islands Insurance. NFU Mutual Direct is our contact centre, based in Glasgow City Centre. Our Personal Protection products are serviced through Avon Insurance, based in the heart of Stratford-upon-Avon.
While always remaining loyal to our roots, we’ve moved with the times. Our potential customer base has grown and millions of households and businesses could benefit from our combination of technical expertise, competitive prices and most importantly, our local approach.

From humble roots, we've grown into a multi-million pound insurance and financial services organisation employing around 3,800 people throughout the UK.
We offer insurance, pensions, investments, protection and financial services. Whether our customers are insuring their home or their business, organising a pension or investing their money, our experts advise them how to do it.
With over 300 local Agency offices, our customers are as diverse as our products. But each and every customer appreciates – and deserves – good service and honest advice. Both of which are at the core of our business.
