About us

For over 100 years, we've insured Britain's farming communities. Now, our customers come from all walks of life, but our ethos is the same – honesty, fairness and trust.

Today, our customers are as diverse as our products. But each and every one of them appreciates – and deserves – personal service and honest advice. These are the cornerstones of our business; always have been, always will be. We offer insurance, pensions, investments, protection and financial services. Whether our customers are insuring their home or their business, organising a pension or investing their money, our experts advise them how to do it. We believe in taking the time to find products to meet their needs, inspiring trust and building relations by exceeding expectations.

It's a time-tested formula which puts quality customer service over a quick sale every time. It's an approach that clearly works too: as well as our high policy-renewal rate and positive customer feedback, we've beaten some of Britain's biggest insurance names to win the prestigious Which? Award for Best Insurance Services Provider 2016 – and for the third year running. We also became Which? Recommended Provider for both Home and Car insurance, for the twelfth time. And, more recently, we won the Most Trusted Home Insurance Provider award at the 2016 Moneywise Customer Service Awards.

A potted company history

1910

The Stratford and District Farmer’s Union started offering cost-price insurance to attract more members into their Union. The Midland Farmers Mutual Insurance Society was formed.

1910s

Initially, the company operated solely around the Stratford-upon-Avon area. But, in time, farmers from other areas expressed interest in what they were doing.

1919

The Mutual won a bid to insure the National Farmers Union of England and Wales. And so the National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society was formed.

1925

Insurance was offered to non-farming customers through Avon Insurance.

1933

The Society more than tripled in size, going from employing 40 staff in 1923 to 150 staff by 1933.

1935

Almost 100,000 farming customers insured through NFU Mutual, but the growth did not stop there.

1952

The NFU Mutual income was almost £4 million with assets totalling £9 million.

1967

Continued our support of the farming community when victims of the Foot and Mouth outbreak received a share of over £1.5 million in indemnities.

1997

Launched our Risk Management Service.

1998

Started insuring individuals and businesses outside the farming industry.

1998

Set up the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust to promote and support charities in the United Kingdom working in agriculture, rural development and insurance.

2016

With over 900,000 customers and 300 local branches nationwide, we're big on local presence and personal service.
